Revealed in June 2024, the Tourbillon builds on the legacy of its predecessor, the Chiron, but with a relentless focus on pushing boundaries—proving that even legendary performance can be surpassed.

From Simulation to Reality: The Aerodynamic Journey

The Tourbillon’s development began 15 months before its debut, rooted in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Bugatti’s engineers sought to outdo the Chiron’s already impressive low-drag profile, targeting unprecedented stability and efficiency. To validate their digital models, a half-scale prototype underwent rigorous testing in an Italian wind tunnel.

Crafted from 250 3D-printed components and studded with over 100 pressure taps, the scale model allowed engineers to measure mass flow, static pressure, and air velocity across every critical surface. “This was our first validation of the design’s potential,” said David Šoštarić, Bugatti Rimac’s Head of Aerodynamics. “We explored different volumes and refinements, ensuring every curve and vent served a purpose.”

Precision Redesign: Cutting Drag, Enhancing Flow

Key enhancements emerged from the data: a reduced frontal area, a sculpted rear diffuser, and a streamlined cockpit profile. These refinements minimized turbulence and optimized airflow, enabling the Tourbillon to achieve its top speed without deploying its rear wing—a feat that underscores its aerodynamic brilliance.

“The Chiron set a high bar, but the Tourbillon demanded innovation at every turn,” explained Paul Burnham, Bugatti’s Chief Vehicle Engineer. “Our goal was holistic optimization: every surface, from the front splitter to the rear undertray, works in harmony to balance drag and downforce.”

Scaling Up: Full-Size Validation

After validating the scale model, Bugatti transitioned to full-scale prototypes. Wind tunnel testing with a life-size Tourbillon allowed engineers to calibrate simulations with millimeter precision. “Moving to full-scale was critical,” Burnham noted. “It’s about bridging the gap between digital predictions and real-world performance, ensuring our simulations match reality.”

Hybrid Complexity: Cooling a Dual Powertrain

The Tourbillon’s hybrid powertrain—a fusion of Bugatti’s iconic W16 combustion engine and cutting-edge electric motors—introduced new thermal challenges. Cooling this system required meticulous airflow management, from radiator channels at the front to the signature C-line intakes behind the doors.

“The hybrid system adds layers of complexity,” Šoštarić admitted. “We scrutinized every airflow path to ensure cooling meets the demands of both electric and combustion performance. The C-line, a nod to Bugatti’s heritage, became a functional masterpiece, channeling air with surgical precision.”
